My newborn has been in the NICU for the past 4 days (since birth). He had an MRI today. I'm waiting here for the Dr. to call me back for results. What kind of disorders can a MRI find related to seizures?

  1. Has your baby had seizures?

Did they also do a ultrasound??

MRI's are more precise in its findings.

This test is done usually within the first 8 days  of birth.

Normally, they are checking for cerebral lesions.

  2. They could be checking for nerve problems...often seizures are related to neurological problems. Since he's a preemie, they are probably just looking at his level of development to determine a cause for the seizures. My son was a preemie and he was given drugs to keep him "paralyzed"...then he was administered phenobarbital to prevent seizures.I know this is a scary time for you....just put your faith in God and be positive. My son is 14 years old now and is starting running back for his football team...they do overcome this and will amaze you!

  3. MRI shows your internal organs, perhaps they are looking for a tumor or lesions in the brain which may cause seizures, although its unlikely.

  4. I'm sorry to hear that. My nephew went through the same thing.  He, too, was having seizures.  They looked for signs of a stroke or bleed of the brain among other things.  They will be able to tell how bad it is.  My nephew's was supposed to be bad.  They put him on Phenyl. Barb. for seizures.  His pronosis wasn't good.  They gave a lot of negative outcomes - never walk, talk, sit up alone...  Today, he walks, talks, and is doing great in school (he's about to go into 4th grade).  He hasn't had a seizure since he was 7 months old!  Try not to worry.  I'll send positive thoughts your way!
