i am 6' 160 and i have been surfing for two years now i now use a 6'10 fish and can ride pretty well. i am looking to get a board to step up my surfing so i can turn and cutback better. I used a 6'3 traditional shortboard ans had trouble getting up. Can you suggest a board for me? i was really thinking a 6'3 fish- specifically the 6'3 seven surfboards aussie fish. would this board be right for me?

Thanks a lot

  1. Usually, you can ride a fish a bit shorter than you would a performance board, and that leads to a question of why you are having a hard time getting up on the 6'3". It may be the board not being appropriate for your size, skill level and the waves you are riding, so get into a shop and rap with the surfers there.

It may also be a question of practice. Unless you switch boards all the time, transitioning from one style to another can take some time. I would guess you should be good with a 6'3", but gain, I don't know all of the variables. The folks in your local shop can give you better answers.

As far as the 7S, it is purely a popout (China board!  http://bp3.blogger.com/_hPACOtZKKko/RkST... Now, if that's all you can afford, then sometimes a guy has to do what a guy has to do, but otherwise, I'd look for a real surfboard. However, as far as popouts go, I have seen 7S fish in the water, and they aren't all that bad. http://www.mckevlins.com/nopopstory.htm

  2. Yes, a 6'3-6'6 fish would be a good choice.

  3. You really need to describe the waves you are riding. But going with what you've provided: wanting to go to a performance board but not able to get up on a standard 6'3", I'd say you are correct with a 6'3"-6'6" aussie fish. I used the same board for a while in mushy waves. The extra volume in the nose will get you into waves earlier, the wide swallow tail will give you more stability and the straight soft rails will help you keep your speed when you make a mistake. It will be a great board for you to progress on.

  4. That one you said is a good board so go for it.
