My notebook doesn't find WLAN networks anymore... Is my network card broken?

I suddenly lost my WLAN connection on my notebook and can't restore it. I now am connected to my modem via a LAN cable, but that's no proper replacement for WLAN. My notebook cannot find any WLAN networks and if I try to identify the problem it says that there is no WLAN device installed on my laptop which obviously is not true. In the system control it says my network card works impeccably. Could it still be broken? If not, how do I make it find networks again? (The driver is the newest one there is.)
