  1. Go for a Ford e.g. Escort or Fiesta or go for a Vauxhall e.g. Astra or a Vectra ! Cheap to buy ! Cheap to get Spare Parts for from either a Car Salvage Yard or a Motor Factors ! Relatively Cheap to maintain & to insure ! Get as much Service History on your Prospective NEW Used Car as you can e.g. Service History & as many as the Old MOT Certificates as possible ! Check that the Mileage on the Service Book & the MOT Certificates tallies up ! Use a Permanent Magnet to check for Bodywork Repairs e.g. where Body Filler has been used then the Permanent Magnet will NOT adhere ! Take a Friend / Local Mechanic who knows about Cars to give your prospective purchase the ONCE over ! NEVER look at a Used Car in Darkness under Artificial Lights because Defects etc. are NOT so obvious or in Bad Weather e.g. Pouring Rain because you will be rushed because of the unfavourable weather conditions !

  2. I think VW golf's are very reliable and you can pick them up in good condition for as little as £1000.

  3. go to the slighty used, section

  4. Let me tell you about an old mate of mine in S Wales, Pat Malloney was his name, now deseased. What Pat used to do was go to a showroom and pick up a very cheap part exchanged car which was sold with an M O T and sometimes even had a good bit of tax on it. His only concern was that it was running OK and M O T d, He would pay around three hundred pounds and when the MOT was due he would simply scrap the car for about fifty quid and go and get another.

  5. get another car like yours and use your old car for parts.

  6. Under a thou for a superbly built Mercedes 190E with service history, reliability and they go on forever.  I've seen them on eBay with over 350,000 on the clock!  Service spares are cheap as chips from GSF, and they are simple to work on.  Fast enough, safe, good handling and brakes, and anything less will feel cheap and nasty.
