My oldest cat, (female, 6 years spayed) got out apparently early this morning. She is familiar with our porch unlike our other cat (female, 5 years, spayed) who does NOT ever go outdoors. In fact the only time the older one goes out is if I sit on my porch and hold her when its nice out, but I rarely do that.

Anyway, we brought her in....she must have snuck out unnoticed early this morning because when I woke up she was on the porch...someone else must have not have shut the door tightly. I brought her in and she seemed ok, went right to the litter box and began eating and drinking. Then she went under my bed and the little cat began to hiss and growl which she never does.

I took the older cat aside and gave her a good bath. I towled her down and then both cats went to the food bowl and they were fine for a few seconds and it began again. Cooled off and then I gave them each some catnip to mellow out a bit. The young one was then under my bed so I put the older one under there too and it was fine for a few but she hissed but the older one stayed put for a bit. I even tried brushing them both with a new cat brush I got so they can "put the scents of them both" together, after I bathed her of course.

I was out for about 5 hours today and left them unattended but was so nervous to do so, I really am worried. Is there anyone who can relate, offer advice or just simply ease my mind? Im very worried right now.

  1. It's the scent.  Even though you brushed them both with the same brush, it's still a different scent. Things should calm down in a couple of days.

  2. Your little kitty is just confused by all the new smells that your other cat brought back. I would probably have given the one a bath too, just to try and remove the smells. They will be ok in the next few days
