  1. Most pet birds (and even wild ones) go through what is called a progressive molt. This means that they molt in one area- and then move to the next. Ex. If their wings are molting- they will lose a feather on each side at the same time, and continue this until all the wing feathers are new. Then they may molt on the head next. This is so that birds always have enough feathers to fly. Because of this, sometimes it seams like birds are always molting. It may last for months. I have several different birds. In the spring they all have a really fast molt, they are getting all of their potential mating feathers looking the best!  Right now it seems like everyone is molting again- and it can take weeks or months.

  2. It lasts just a couple of weeks. My quaker used to get really itchy at that time and really liked to be held and scratched. This could be a good bonding time for you if he is this friendly.

    Good luck!

  3. They will usually molt between 2 weeks and a month. Make sure you give your bird some extra protein and calcium to aid the process. There are special feeds you can buy but if you use common sense you can make the food yourself.
