My opponents time runs out yet the game continues. Then the game freezes. Why?

This happens continuously, almost daily. It began in Firefox so I switched to Explorer. In Mozilla the game froze then the game page would go blank. I return to the room and find another player playing for me. I lose points and enjoyment of playing chess. Now with Explorer the game just freezes and I can't do anything. Why?
