I have a gorgeou orchid, it is a Phalaenopsis orchid. I watered it like they told me and it was doing great. It got a few new blossoms and everything. However, it slowly began to loose them and now they are all gone. Will they ever grow back? Is this the growing patter of them or is it dead?

  1. Phal blossoms last a long time, but not forever. It's normal for them to drop. You can cut the stem back a little and see if it will blossom again (it may not) or just cut it all the way down. Keep it watered and in filtered light (not direct sunlight) and it will blossom beautifully for you next year, and for years to come!

  2. Phalaenopsis orchids are actually one of the easiest care orchids out there. I don't know where you bought it or how they told you to care for it, but I have orchids and will tell you what I know

First, flower drop might mean a couple things. It could be that it is just done flowering. If so, trim the flower stalk to just above a node (the swollen part on the stem) on the flower stalk.  This usually encourages more flower stems to grow out of that existing stalk.

Another reason for flower drop, is that it dried out too much between waterings. When you water your orchid, make sure you put into a pan of water up to the rim of the pot it is in and soak it for 10 to 15 minutes. Let it drain thoroughly. The growing medium should be damp and cool to the touch. If it isn't, it is time to water. During active growing period, fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer or buy a special orchid fertilizer (which can be found in your local garden center). Do not fertilize when in bloom.

How is the overall appearance of the plant? Do the leaves look healthy and green.  Look at the roots. They should be nice and robust and either green or white in color.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  3. This is normal. The plant will now begin making a new set of leaves and roots.

This is a good time to repot the orchid.

By the end of the year a new flower spike should develop which will take several months to grow and produce bloom.
