Question:

My oven caught on fire, what do I do now?

So last night I was preheating it, heard some really weird sounds coming from the oven and the little coil thing in the bottom was sparking like crazy and a section of it was glowing red (even after turning it off but it did eventually stop) there are electric burn marks inside the oven now, do I just need to replace the coil, or is there something worse going on? I've checked and there was no food on the coil that caused this. Thanks in advance...

  1. Sounds like the element has shorted out to the oven body. As elements get wear out, they can do this sort of thing. You will just need to replace the element is all. Hopefully the enamel finish in the oven is not to badly damaged. If it is, I would go to an appliance store parts department and get touch up paint for the porcelain finish. They might have to order it in if they don't stock it so have the oven model number handy (found usually behind the bottom drawer on the metal frame). You will need it to get the proper element anyways since there are many different styles.

  2. it's the coil in the oven it will have to be replaced...........tom

  3. Unplug the range and remove the two 1/4 nuts that hold the element in place.  Pull the element out a few inches and you can remove the wire terminals.  Take the old element with you when you go to get a new one.

  4. do not try to remove the element until you have pull the fuses or shut off the circuit breakers, there is power to the elements all the time even when you have it turned off. This happens alot. TURN OFF THE POWER FIRST!
