My parakeet has feathers missing on his back. The bare spot is red. What could it be?

Is the bird by itself or is there a chance that something else could be harming it???   It sounds like a "sore" spot.  Sometimes when they are depressed or bored, they will pick at themselves.  You might also check by running your fingers through his feathers to see if he might have mites (tiny little bugs) which cause discomfort and itching and they can cause the birds to peck at themselves.  The pet stores carry dusting powder to take care of the mites, but if it is a problem with the bird just pecking itself you need to figure out why he is doing it and try to fix the problem.   Sometimes adding toys, different food, etc.
