My parakeet has p**p stains on her butt feathers. What is it?

I rescued and adopted three parakeets and a cockatiel after they were abandoned in the hot street by their prior owners. They were wrapped up in a black sweater and were pretty much left to die in searing hot 100 degree weather.

I noticed that the female parakeet (who I named Sky) had p**p stained on her butt. Her feathers had actually matted together, and unlike the other two males - she was the only one with this problem. I tried to Google it, to try and find out what it was... but I couldn't find any information.

I'm thinking it's just lack of a proper diet and poor nutrition that has just caused her stool to become really loose and gross; in which case has stained and ruined her butt feathers. I tried cleaning her with a baby wipe yesterday, but it still looks kind of gross.

Could I get opinions to what it might be and recommendation to make her better and make her feathers puffy and healthy again?

  1. i rescued a bird with a bad leg and since he couldnt stand his "butt feathers" became poopy and gross! if she or he was previously on a cloth where her/his p**p was right there and she walked in it or something then the feathers will become like that. dont worry just clean it off and if it keeps hapening then put her/him in a cage were the p**p will not be there for the brid to step in.                  Have fun with them!!

  2. honestly, i would just take care of her like you are and see if anything changes. i think your theory about the diet and nutrition is valid.

and if i can get ahold of my friend who is a bird lover (who takes care of injured and abandoned birds) i will try to get you a better answer.
