My parakeet is very shy and skittish...HELP!

Question

I got a parakeet for my birthday 4 to 5 months ago and he is still not used to me! He won't "step up" on my finger and he dodges me when i try to pet him in his cage. I can eventually stroke him if i am very calm. I have been gone a lot this summer but still this is ridiculous! i try to feed him vegetables but he won't eat them. What do I do?

He is afraid.  Give the bird time. It is new surroundings to him.  Don't do anything.  Don't feel bad I went through the same thing and I have had maybe 8 birds.  It will be ok.  Try to just stroke him.  He might step up on your finger if you put Parakeet treat in your hand, not veggies.  Karen

I would try showing him/her that you mean him no harm and to slowly let him get used to you.
