My parakeet recently began showing signs of sickness. It began with him being quite all the time and sitting puffed up on his perches. I went to see an Avian Vet(one that specializes in birds) and he checked the bird out. Couldn't find anything wrong with it, he gave it a Vitamin shot and gave me some medicine to mix with the bird's water. Two days have passed since the Vet visit and my bird seems to be getting worse. Just an hour ago i took him out of the cage and put him on my palm, he layed on my palm, didin't even bother trying to get up! I honestly don't know what to do, i think this might be it for him....

  1. Did the vet not do any tests, like a blood test or gram stain or examine his poops?    I would either see another avian vet or call this one back and tell him your bird is getting worse.  Please don't wait too long.

  2. If the bird isn't old (if he is, then your right =/), then there are some things you can do.

Call your vet back up, or call a different vet. Tell him the symptoms are getting worse! Until you can get him into a vet again...

Take a clean sock and fill it 3/4 of the way with uncooked rice (any kind) and knot the end closed. Microwave it for about a minute or a little longer (no more than 1 1/2 minutes).  Shake it out and feel it to be sure the heat isn't too hot and it's evenly distributed.  Put this in the cage with your little one to help generate heat and cover the cage with a blanket, leaving just part of one side open for air circulation and so you can peek in to see how she is.

Try to keep her hydrated by offering a drop of unflavored Pedialyte or water (or, in a pinch, Gatorade that has no added zinc. Not much of this, though! Water is always the best!) every half hour or so (it's easier to use a small eyedropper, a syringe, or even a straw, just dip the straw into the liquid and hold your finger over the opposite end to keep the liquid in - when you remove your finger, the liquid will come out).

Good Luck to your little guy!
