Question:

My parakeet will not stand on my finger. I have tried everything!?

My parakeet sits on the perch I hold for him, but only when I gently push it against his stomach. One time he even got on my finger, but now he tries to bite me. Although he appears calm, and does not look nervous when I hold my finger out, when I gently push my finger to his lower stomach, he moves his beak like he is going to bite. I have had this bird for a couple years, and just recently decided to train it to go on my finger, but how can I make my parakeet trust me when I have tried everything people say to do?

  1. OMG.i own 2 parakeets & i've had the same problem too. i think that it's just a matter of time that he will learn to climb onto your finger. my parakeet often does the same thing. maybe it's because so much time has past that you didn't teach him to stand on your finger. just give it time, spend a little more time w/him each day and have PATIENCE! it's something i had to learn how to do. also, maybe tell him to "step up" while pressing your finger against him. and a firm "no" when he wants to bite. Good Luck! =)

  2. In the first place, you shouldn't have waited for years. But don't worry about it now. Since the "thrusting" method you said dosen't work, you can try the no physical contact method.

SLowly move your finger towards it but don't touch it. Say "up". It will attempt to bite but ignore that. It is pretending. If it really bites, bear with it cause this will let it know biting is no use and it will stop eventually. After all the stupid biting, you must still be firm and say "up". It will then listen to you and stand on your finger.

I encounted the same problem as you often. (:
