my parakeet doesn't really like to sit with me or anyone else, he likes to sing a lot, but never while near me or on me, he only likes to sing when either there is music playing, or there is a loud sound, or nobody is near him. But whenever I take him out to hold him he flys away from me. is there any way that i can get him to sit with me and sing?

  1. He's probably nervous. Just spend time with him and as near as you can to him until he becomes used to you near him, then move closer, etc....

He probably doesn't like being held either. His instincts tell him that he is trapped by a predator.

Try to teach him to perch on your finger.

  2. birds will make noise or 'sing' when they are comfortable in their environment. when you have him out with you he has to be 'on alert' to his surroundings. it probably wont happen while you have him out with you. i have a conure that talks up a storm when i clean his cage. but other than that he doesn't say much. when i pick him up and move him with me around the room i can tell by his body language that he's looking all around him wondering what is around the next corner. you have to realize that they are scared of everything. they do not understand that the couch doesn't move or the kitchen table. let alone people around moving around or acting wildy does not help the situation. make his envrinment as calm as possible when he's out. and if you dont want him to fly you can get his wings trimmed. they will grow back. but it  helps the taming process a little in that if he jumps/flys away from you then he needs your help to get him up and back to his house.

  3. Congratulations on getting a parakeet that's so lively and can sing to music! Your actually really lucky. All you need to do is let him trust you. I you were in a cage with a huge flesh like monster trying to get near you, wouldn't you be a little... isolated? Try to entice him with spray millet, its full of fat so naturally, parakeets love it :) But only give him a full straw like every month or so. He'll get that you aren't going to eat him sooner or later. Let him get used to your hands for a few weeks, combined with a soft and soothing voice and your parakeet will be a cuddly teddy bear!

  4. he's probablyj ust scared, you have to let him get used to you, pet him a lot and visit him a lot and he'll get to know you, than try letting him perch on your finger and turn on some music and maybe he'll sing

    Good luck :]
