  1. They sound like they're cold.  The shaking or sudden fluttering is like rubbing your hands together.  It generates heat and if they're puffed up it's a sign they're using their feathers as insulation to keep their body heat.  Make sure their cage isn't over a vent that gives them a draft or put the cage near a warm window and see if the fluttering stops.

  2. Where did you get your parakeet? Where did you place them?

It seems that your bird is sick and depending on his situation and how bad is the disease usually by the time they look really sick, it’s usually too late to save them.

Look for these early warning signs:

Poor Appetite.  Keep track of how much your parakeet eats.  If he’s “off his feed” even one day, it could indicate a problem.

Weird Droppings.  More?  Less?  Watery?  Funny color?  If you see changes in his droppings, beware.  Changes in his food can also trigger strange droppings.

Less Activity.  Sick parakeets decrease their activities.  They chatter and sing less.

Mood Change.  Formerly friendly fellows grow nervous, defensive, fearful, grouchy.

Change in Appearance.  Look for ruffled feathers.  Poor posture.  Sleepy eyes.  Droopy perching.  Overgrown beak or toenails.

Strange Breathing.  Noticeable and/or fast breathing.  Voice change or strange sounds – sneezes or wheezes.  Sores.  Unusual crustiness of face, beak, legs or toes.  Or discoloration or inflammation.

Any Lumps.  Any abnormal growth presents a problem.  See your vet.  Not just any vet -- a bird vet.

Any Discharge.  Any strange liquid oozing from his eyes or nostrils means he needs a vet fast.  This is not a time for home remedies.

  3. If they were too hot they would be panting and holding their wings away from their bodies.

Consider the room temperature and whether there was a change from the place you got them from.  If they are used to a higher temperature and you have them at a lower temperature they will get chilled.  Add the stress to that and it's not a healthy situation for them.

My assumption is they are both scared and cold so cover their cage on 3 sides and keep them away from drafts and a lot of noise and let them be for a few days so they can acclimate and become more comfortable in their new home.

  4. i actually have 2 parakeets of my own too.

when my birds shake up, its usually because they are cold and trying to protect themselves, but we live in a warm area so they usually do that at night. my birds also puff up when something is scaring them. since you have only had them for a day, they are really scared. they are both in a new environment and everything is new to them. so just relax and try not to make too much noise or sudden movements around them for the next couple of days and they will be just fine.

i hope that helped and good luck!

  5. when they shake they are probably shaking dust and extra feathers from there wings.  Wame with puffing

  6. Shaking....

Lets look into it. It is actually tidying its featherse and getting rid of the dirt in their body. Its normal. Every birdie does that so many times a day.

Puffing up is a form of relaxation for them. They puff up when they are relaxed most of the time and they seem to look sleepy. Awwwww.....so cute.
