My parents always yell at me for being immature (I'm 18)?

i'm home for the summer from college...i swear every few days my parents will yell at me over some little thing and say i'm acting like a 5 year old. for example, i've been sort of relaxed this summer (reading, working out, watching Olympics) and my parents yell that i'm just like a lazy kid with no ambition in life. they also get so pissed when i argue with my younger brother (even though i rarely do it anymore). the weird thing is, i thought i was more mature than i was in high school. anyways, it's driving me nuts and it's really hurtful to know that they think i act like a "big baby". ...what should i do?

  1. get a job and move out.

  2. Remember, it takes one to know one!  (Your 'rents are probably not the world's most shining example of maturity either, right?)

Don't expect perfection from your parents.  They make mistakes too.  They're exactly like you, only with more life experience and a different set of responsibilities.  They've been fallible all your life, but that sometimes only starts to become obvious as you get a little older and experienced yourself.  But if you're living with them, tacitly you've agreed to accept their shortcomings!  (And since it's their house, it doesn't *quite* work both ways.)

Be flexible and try your best to address their criticisms in a way that acknowledges that you're on their turf, but at the same time, sends the message that you're an adult too, whose decisions ought to be respected.  Engaging in arguments with your brother, however rarely, will create an impression that will cause your parents to view you as a child.  Adults don't argue with children.  If you try to see things from their point of view, and make an effort to defuse more heated discussions, you will find that the respect follows.

  3. sounds like your parents want you to start working.

  4. they're just probably not used to you being around as much in the house. they probably just missed you. maybe prepare a meal for the family and talk about how things are going with, what you been doing and stuff when you we're away.

  5. Try and make them happy

  6. They're probably just nervous that now you're done with highschool its time for you to either get a job or start college. If you have not actively pursued either of these venues it makes them nervous that they're going to have to support you while you do nothing for the rest of your life (even if you're just enjoying your summer after a long 12 years of school). I'd say grab a few applications for jobs and some information about colleges and leave it around the house. They'll just be excited you've taken a step (even if you don't even read them.)

  7. MOVE OUT.

  8. I would try confronting your parents in a calm, adult manner. Tell them how you feel without accusing them. You don't want to get into a fight with them either. If you sit down and have an honest conversation, they'll see you're more mature than they give your credit for. Also, if you make an effort to stop the habits they are complaining about, things can only get better.

  9. Prove them wrong. Get a job and buy them stuff and give your brother something just to prove them wrong (even if it's out of spite, dont feel bad :D).

  10. Remind them that name-calling is immature.

  11. They probably think that at your age you should be having interests in working and helping them out around the house.

Remember that your generation is much different than when they were growing up. They were probably doing things their parents forced them to do...i.e work and pay for their bills

  12. They miss you. I know it sounds weird...lol I'm going through the same thing, it's because they miss how it used to be when you were in high school and they could boss you around. It's very hard for them to accept that you are grown now and that u can make your own decisions, you are in college after all. Just let them "express" themselves...REMEMBER: your going back to college soon :) haha
