Question:

My parents bought me a new bicycle..and I hate it!?

My parents bought me a mountain bike for my birthday and I hate it. I've always hated mountain bikes, just can't get used to them. I love my old BMX, (even thought it is too small) but I only feel comfortable riding that. Even if I say that I hate it, we can't return it as I've ridden it (or can you?). And when I go bike riding with my friends, I want to ride my BMX, not the mountain bike. Should I find out how much it was and then give them back the money to compensate for what they've spent?

Any pointers on to what I should do?

  1. Tell them you really appreciate the gift, but that you would get much more use out of a BMX.

If I was a parent and bought my child a bike I'd want them to use it, which is why I think the above is a good thing to say to them.

  2. Depending on what your parents would think of you returning their gift, the best thing you could do is go to a bike shop and see if they would accept it as a trade in. You can get store credit or cash and buy a new bmx bike or trick out your old one.

Because it was your parents that gave you the bike, let them know that you don't like it and see what they suggest. If they really don't like you returning it, you may just want to hang onto it for a few years and then sell it later.

  3. There is a lot to like about mtn bikes. There tough, versatile, and really can be more fun than BMX.  If you are a teenager now and soon to leave for college, you might consider keeping the mtn bike. Mtn bikes are the best way to get around cheaply in college. If you are an avid BMX'er and race at the local track or just hanging out with your friends, by all means upgrade and stick with what you know. Just remember, there are only a relatively few girls that are into BMX and hundreds of thousands that are into mtn biking. I met my wife back in college on a school organized mtn bike ride.

I think your parents would be cool with upgrading if that is what you decide on. If your friends are starting to make the transition from BMX to mtn bikes, you might find yourself left in the dust if they start doing long rides.

  4. If it doesn't look used, you can probably return it and exchange it for another.  I don't think you should have to pay your folks back - it was a gift.  Just explain it to them so their feelings aren't hurt.  (Yeah, parents have feelings, too!)

If you can't return it, maybe you can trade it with someone who wants to sell their BMX bike.

  5. just try to tell ur parents that mountain bikes are old school and bmx is new school..

just return it with the receipt
