My parents deceived me, I can't believe it?

I don't work, have no money. My parents have very little money and they aren't even going to pay a dollar for me to go to college. I'm crying so bad right now, I don't know what to do. I applied for FAFSA recently, what if my college doesn't give me any money 'cuz I applied late? My parents never saved up for college...........I'm so hopeless, I don't know what to do. I needed money for on-campus housing as well which is like 470 bucks per month.

Should I apply for a loan or wait for my FAFSA SAR to come in?

  1. ok first off calm down! It is incredibly easy to get money for college. I am a loan counselor so I can help you out...

first off you need to apply to the college you want and talk to financial aide about what loans are available for you. You want to get a federal loan if possible. They have much better repayment plans. It's good that you applied for fafsa. It shouldn't take to long to come back to you. Once you get the fasfa back it should tell you what you are able to get. A pell grant is the best because it's basically free money. You don't need to pay it back or anything. If your family is low income like you make it sound you should be able to get it. Next, it should say whether you are able to get a subsidized loan(no interest accrued will in NON-repayment) and/or unsubsidized loan(interest accrues daily that you have to pay during repayment). More than likely you will be able to get subsidized. If you are planning on being a teacher, there are forgiveness programs for that. and some other ones coming out later.

What you also want to try to get our GRANTS! Make sure you apply for a CalGrant, which you need to fill out a FASFA first . You can apply for the calgrant sometime aroud august. Check the website to make sure.

hope i helped you out a little

  2. You don't need to apply for loans yet.  You need to work with your financial aid office to find out what aid you are eligible for, how much attending the school will cost and then you can make an educated decision on whether you can afford to attend.

You are not the first student to be in this situation, and you certainly will not be the last.  There are options for you if you are intent on attending college.  You may have to apply to a less expensive school, or local community college.  You may have to choose not to live on campus.  You may need to work a job while attending, or attend part-time.

If your desire to attend college and better yourself is true, there are ways around not having money saved up for school.

As far as your FAFSA being late, there is no drop-dead deadline.  There is a priority deadline for schools and in most states, but you can apply while attending school and have funds disbursed retroactively so long as they disburse within the academic year you are attending.

    Hope that helps you some.

  3. Did your parent's tell you that they were going to pay your way through college? I'm not sure where the deception comes in to play in your statement.  You don't work and have no money which in some cases is actually better for you when it comes to applying for financial aid. Especially since your parents have very little money and they didn't save up any money.

It's strange to think of it this way, but, you're EXACTLY the student that the government created financial aid to help!  Don't cry until you get your aid package from the school.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Financial aid is designed to give students a chance to attend school who otherwise couldn't because of financial barriers. Sounds like you, doesn't it!  Keep your chin up, dry those tears and file early next year, and each year you'll need aid.

  4. Explain this to the financial aid office at your school. They have seen may cases similar to yours and are usually willing to help you out. my school's financial aid office says always see them before you take out loans. I am still a dependent and my mom fills out my FAFSA. I pay the rest w/ loans. You still may get regular gov't loans but not the funding issued by the school(only if they have money left over). If you missed the deadline then u are low on the list for aid but if they for some reason those who made the deadline transfer out or refuse the aid you will get it. this may sound a little confusing but dont give up!!College is important, go the the financial aid office for help.wait for the FAFSA to come in.there is no harm in doing so

  5. Believe me your not the only one in this situation :] (points to me)

I suggest you exhaust all your other options (grants,scholarships,etc..) *before* you apply for a loan. If all of those are maxed out (or if you didnt meet deadline) and you still need money, apply for a guaranteed loan(low interest rate and deffered payments such as one through sallie mae or stafford). If that still dosn't cover it, apply for a private loan last. Privates are last because they tend to have higher interest rates(unless you have a co-signer with great credit) and not so forgiving if you make late payments.

You can also get an on campus job, just talk to the colleges finacial aid advisor(as I'm going to do). From what I've heard they will be flexable and only give you less than 20hrs. It will give you job experience and some cash in your pocket.

This is what I've learned so far, and hope it helps! Also, If you would like some support or have any questions feel free to email me :]
