i would like to go to McGill, one of the most reputed universities in Canada, for my undergrad.

However, my parents don't believe i am ready to move away at the age of 18. They think that i should instead get a high GPA at a local university for undergrad, and then go to McGill or someplace reputed like that for grad school (they think GPA is the determining factor for undergrad, rather than rep).

Is this reasonable?

i plan on going to law school in the future, if that helps any!

thanks for your advice.

  1. "Reasonable" is one of those words like "beautiful".   "Beauty (and 'reasonableness') is in the eye of the beholder.  I lived in a dorm from the first day of my Freshman year till I got married at the end of my Junior year, but then, I worked to pay my way into college, including books and dorm, and as a result, I didn't need my parents' permission.   And I was only 17 when I entered college because of the date of my birthday.  It always kept me the youngest kid in my class.  So, if you worked to pay your way into college, I bet your parents' permission wouldn't be so necessary.   And I earned the money in only three months employment in a manual labor job during the summer prior to my entry into college, so, if you want to go and live in a dorm, you're work's cut out for you, but it is very possible.  God Bless you.

  2. yes, your parents are right. Give yourself a time and experience undergraduate education while at home which gives you a maturity to stay away from home when u complete UG and then after when u will get a job ,then that will be right time to go and study at Mcgill Grad.

  3. Who's going to pay the bills?  Whoever pays the bills calls the shots.  Once you're a legal adult, you can do whatever you want.  But if you want to do anything on your parent's dime, then they have the last word.
