They said that if i choose french they will match to my school and personally change it. I want any legal advice that protect me and give me the opportunity to choose classes that i want in high school.I took french before and this is my first year of taking french and im in grade 10 , if i take it ill be in french 3 . i told them they should wait till i go to college for them to let me take spanish. Do you have any advice or supporting to back my right as a child?

  1. i wanted to take french in high school too but spanish has really come in handy. and unless u move to france, u really wont have any use for it. i would suggest taking spanish for 3 years (the required amount in my state) and then french ur last year. please trust me on this!

  2. I think your best approach is to deal with this civilly, rather than looking into legal options (you probably don't have any, being a minor -- your parents have the legal right to make decisions for you, as far as I know).

Talk to them.  Tell them why you want to take French.  Ask them why they want you to take Spanish.  Be calm.  Don't turn it into a fight, but try to listen to one another and discuss the options and the pros/cons of each language.

If you want to try to convince them of your position, you could also talk to your potential French teacher or a school counselor and try to get them to argue your case with your parents.

Point out that you will probably do better in a class in which you are actually interested, whereas if they force you to take a subject you don't want to take, it may effect your outlook and therefore your results/grades.

You could also point out that sticking with the language you've already started will mean you get to know more of it.  You will be able to advance to French 5 or so (if your school offers levels that high), rather than starting from scratch with Spanish and only getting up to Spanish 3, so you will be more fluent in your foreign language.

    Good luck!
