I don't want to sound ungrateful, but my parents won't let me join the drama club or let me row crew at school, I'm 16 years old and want to become an actor or at least row in the Olympics these two things have been my dream since the 2004 summer Olympics.

I love to row and love to act. My parents won't let me act due to the fact that they don't think it's an honorable job or an honorable hobby, and they won't let me row because they don't think it's an honorable sport. Can anyone please tell me what to do?

PS: I fit fairly well in acting since my teacher last year told me I can memorize things quickly.

PSS: I want to row because it's a really great sport.

  1. First of all, you're 16. In 2 more years you'll be able to whatever the h**l you want.

Second of all, I am a professional theatre artist and can tell you that memorizing is one of the least important aspect of doing theatre. To be a good actor means enlightening yourself to the character of others and maintain an enormous sense of responsibility and grace. I would re-think that. Also, high school drama is a completely different world than real theatre.

As for rowing...I have no idea, but if it's what you like, go for it!

Just remember that your parents don't control your life. You can prepare for both of these skills by reading books, browsing the web, and building contacts until your old enough to take action. It's not all about "doing." And, you'll have plenty of time to "do" stuff when you finish puberty and high school.

  2. I'm sorry your parents won't let you do those things. Sit and talk with them and ask them why you can't join, how you can negotiate, and maybe find out something you can do that they approve of. Tell them that it really hurts you that they won't let you do the things you love, and that just because you participate in a supposedly dishonorable sport, it doesn't mean that you are not an honorable person. Good luck.

  3. Tell them that if you aren't going to do it now, you will just end up doing it in college so either way, even if you have to wait a few years, they won't be able to stop you.
