I have a parrot he only says hello, and meows like a cat the home he came from had a cat,it's been 2-3 months he still only says hello and meows like a cat no other words once in awhile it sounds like he is yelling out whatttttttttttt but he barely does it.And the doctor want him on a pellet diet and for me to only use seeds as a treat but this doctor charged $100 and all his info was not correct.I have no idea how old the bird is,or what kind of bird it is.He will not eat any fruit or veggies at all no matter what. he only likes seed the docs say thats not healthy he needs only pellets.anyway the parrot wants bread with peanut butter is that ok to eat,he rather eat things like chips or something crazy and I have to take it away.when is it going to talk like einstien.

  1. Bread only i think your Bird is a Lovebird::http://bp3.blogger.com/_95I0NyvfdaM/Rc3o...

If it looks like that or close to that..

  2. Here's a recipe I found online. I'd go organic as much as possible.

    Cokie's Cookies

1 cup dried fruit (any of your birds favorites-i.e.apricots, apples, figs, dates, coconut, etc.)

    1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal

    1/2 cup raisins

1/4 cup hulled seeds and/or crushed nuts (I use sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts, and walnuts)

    1 Tbs peanut butter

    2 Tbs honey

In a food processor, process all ingredients together except for the honey and peanut butter. You will have a sticky glob to put into a medium size bowl. Add the peanut butter and honey and stir until it gets too thick. Then use your hands to knead the rest to a "rollable" consistency. Make 1/2 inch balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Cool and serve. They are quite delicious (you'll like them too), and they're just the right size for my Scarlet Macaw," Coconut", to hold.

If you put some cut-up fruit in the cage, he might eat it. You need to make sure it's safe for the bird.

If you want it to say more, repeat the same word or phrase to him over and over. If he's learned words before, that's how he did it.

  3. peanut butter has a lot of salt in it, which is not good for your bird but the bread is ok. can you describe him? how big, colors, etc.

trying to get him to talk, make a tape of the words you want him to say and play it for him all day long while you are gone. it will help him learn to speak, but will also keep him company. large birds are very high strung and need alot of attention.

let him eat the seeds but i would get a good mix from petsmart or a good pet store.

  4. Your doctor is correct.  A seed diet is not healthy for parrots.  A good quality pellet food, I use ZuPreem, should be their main staple.  I feed my African Grey a handful of seeds in with her pellet food only once or twice a week. Everyday I put some other "people" food as well in her other dish, mainly veggies, but occasionally fruits, and whatever "healthy" food we're eating for dinner.  Limit dairy products to just about none if you can.  Mine loves any kind of meat and eggs, pizza and pasta/spaghetti & fettucine alfredo, but again, just small amounts.  A small piece of bread with peanut butter is fine, but again, shouldn't be done daily.

You need to just start offering better foods-fruits, veggies, meats, etc. and eventually he should come around and will eat them.  One day mine will love carrots, the next, they're thrown on the floor uneaten.  They'll eat what they're lacking in vitamins and minerals, and if they don't "need" that vitamin, they won't eat it that day I guess you could say.  Just need to give them variety.  And since yours has most likely been on a seed diet, I would suggest cutting that out to only once a week as a treat.

As for the talking, depends on what you have.  Can you post a picture of it?  If not, describe it a little bit color wise and height wise.  Doesn't sound like it came from the best home before, especially being on a seed only diet.  Need to work with him a bunch, and talk to him a lot to help out the vocabulary.  Start with small words-hi or hello.  Just keep repeating it when you see him.  And, not all parrots are big talkers.
