  1. go to www.birdtalk.com

buy the largest cage you can afford. Place in an area free of drafts; not directly in front of a window; out of the way/ not in an area where people are running back and forth all the time. Place in an area where your bird can get at least 12-14 hours of undisturbed sleep.

make sure you have a CD player where you can play gentle classical music or rainforest music on repeat to form a 'white noise' so drown out starling noises that can cause stress. (stress can cause illness in a bird). Play the music when you leave the house on a low volume. Play all night long to help comfort your bird. I have done this for over ten years and my birds are very content. I can't tell you how many times I have had to replace CD players!  I used to buy two; one for the aviary and one for the living room (my amazons are in the living room). I got smart last time and bought a player with separate speakers. Now I have one speaker in the bird room and one in the living room. They listen to the music while I am gone at work and at night. They get all excited at bed time and start getting noisy. I turn the 'rainforest CD' on and they immediately settle down to go to sleep. I have it on a low volume just low enough to drown out the noises going on outside/loud enough to hear but not too loud. (as you would for an infant.)

Assemble a first aid kit and have it next to the cage. I have a clear tote that I have underneath the cage. The tote holds a carry tote (if I have to take the birds somewhere), needle nose pliers (if I have to pull a bleeding blood feather), a clean towel in a ziploc bag, styptic powder w/benzocaine (stops bleeding with a pain reliever included), nail clippers, bar of  ivory soap (stops up a bleeding claw by plugging nail by scrapping nail against soap/pure parafin wax also works),cotton balls, gauze pads, sterile water pouch.

The clear tote comes in handy to store clean food dishes in ziploc bags, treats, birdie flight suit/harness, clean toys (I rotate every couple weeks so they don't get bored).

I buy bird food in bulk and put in freezer bags to keep fresh. I have one container that holds about enough for a week that I keep in refrigerator.

I offer one piece of fruit a day and fresh greens, carrot slivers daily. I also have a vegetarian pasta/whole grain soup that I offer to them most every day. I make a pot about once a month, freeze in baby food jars, thaw in refrigerator. I offer about 1/4 cup and they really like it. Mine like chili peppers, fruits, all types of lentils, legumes, vegetables, veggie pastas, nuts, etc.

there isn't room to list all the foods to avoid; so please check into it.

birds have complicated respiratory systems and need to be watched very carefully when not in the cage.

So, check for toxic substances: chocolate, sugar, salt, cigarette smoke, etc.
