My partner is due to finish his mechanic's apprenticeship in November, the garage we both work at is due to shut down, but across the road is a vacant block of land. We are considering buying it and putting a shed on there and running a workshop out of it. What do we need to know and where do I start looking for information?

  1. I would definitely start out by renting a garage. Get things rolling and see how it goes, if you start picking up momentum after a year then look into buying a place.

  2. My first thing would be do ask why the garage you're working at is shutting down? Is the owner (s) retiring? Selling? If they are selling, perhaps consider asking them a series of questions that contributed to the businesses successes and failures. I have my own massage clinic and before I even opened my doors, I asked 3-4 small business owners with various backgrounds for any sort of advice so that I wouldn't be "reinventing" the wheel. The mistakes, the would've, could've, should've's of starting up. All of these pieces of advice proved invaluable. So..start by making a list of questions..and think BIG and outside the box. You don't say if your male or female, but I also checked out the Minority/Womens in Business bureau which is a branch operated out of the one of the state run universities here.  Good luck!

  3. Start at your local SCORE office.

They offer Free advice from a legal aspect as well as from working professionals in their respective fields.  They can recommend the best startup approach and best of all it's free.
