My passport expires ? ?

so my passport recently expires and i have to leave to utah soon. i live america. does the airport ask for some sort of identification ? is it required ?

Passports are required for international travel only.  If you are traveling within the US, you need ID but a passport is not necessary.

You cannot travel overseas without a valid passport.  It doesn't matter if it expired a day or 5 years ago.  Depending on how long ago it expired you may be able to get it renewed fairly quickly.
