If it's a US passport, it is considered valid by Germany until the actual expiration date printed on it:  we have a treaty with Germany - and many other countries - to do this:

You can get in 2 hours at the passport office, I think it run about 75.00+.

get it renewed as soon as possible, for you will need at least 6 months left of validity to travel outside the US.

Since the process is so much more extensive now, go as soon as possible to get it renewed.
