My passport was stamped "leave to enter" in the UK. What exactly does this mean?

I am a US citizen and came to the UK in July to visit my husband. I was planning on leaving in November or January. Last week we went on vacation in Cyprus and when we returned the Immigration Officer stamped my passport "leave to enter" and said I had to leave by November 30th. She said if I want to come back, I have to get entry clearance? What? What do I do? I've contacted the British embassy but keep getting automated help and they don't respond to emails. Can I extend my stay until January?

  1. Leave to enter is a temporary stay visa, like a tourist visa (i belive it's 3 months in the states?). If you overstay you could be deported or not allowed to retrun if they find you. You must Regularise your stay by applying for more leave to enter or leave to remain. If you are married to a UK citizen, you need to contact the Home Office and apply to them, their website is quite detailed so have a look.

  2. Leave then enter and you will find out!

  3. go to the embassy in person.

do not over stay if you do not want huge problems ,paying lawyers and maybe loosing the cance to visit there again..

  4. no, you may not extend your stay until january, you were clearly told the date of exit, november 30th.leave to enter is usually 90 days or more but allowed before entering not afterwards.

in order to re-entry , you must first leave the UK , why have you not received an UK a visa visit for partnership? since you are married to an UK citizen?

would you please come back ?

there is one thing you may not know ?

    Visit for Civil Partnership :

To obtain entry clearance as a visitor in order to register your Civil Partnership, you must meet the normal requirements of the UK Immigration Rules for entry as a visitor:

-you are genuinely seeking entry as a visitor for up to six months

-you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit

-you do not intend to take employment in the UK

-you have enough money to support and accommodate yourself without recourse to public funds or taking employment

-you can meet the cost of a return or onward journey.

In addition you must show that:

-you intend to give notice of civil partnership, or form a civil partnership, in the United Kingdom

-you can produce satisfactory evidence of the arrangements for giving notice of civil partnership, or for your civil partnership ceremony to take place, in the United Kingdom
