“My past experience is enough for me to win U.S. Open in New York,” says Venus Williams
World number 4 Venus Williams, while commenting on the upcoming United States Open on Tuesday, claimed that she is well prepared for the event desspite the fact that the American has not participated in any competitive match since June. This 30-year-old has so far won the United States Open title on two occasions in her career, back in 2000 and 2001.
Venus, who is a former world number one, added that she can’t wait to go out and play some exciting tennis at Flushing Meadows, starting from Monday.
"I had a tough season this year as a result of my leg injuries”, the 30-year-old American told reporters on Tuesday, "however I am all set for the final Grand Slam event of the season now and I am glad to be back on the practice courts to get ready prior to the US Open. I am really looking forward to that and excited to be back on the tennis scene after some back to back injuries that kept me away for the last few months,” she added.
"It would have obviously been better to have contested in at least one of the US Open tune up events. I tried really hard to be ready for the Rogers Cup tennis tournament held in Montreal however, it just didn't work out in the end, so I had no other option except resting and preparing myself mentally as well as physically to come out at the Flushing Meadows without having participated in either of the event”, said the right handed Venus Williams.
Williams, who made a debut at the United States Open at the age of seventeen, before capturing back-to-back trophies in 2000 as well as 2001, told journalists that she will heavily rely on her previous experience in New York. The hard-hitting Florida resident, who is 55-9 in career matches at the Flushing Meadows, further added that her history of success at the championship is enough for boosting up her confidence heading into the first week.
The United States Open remains one of the most successful events for the American tennis ace with over three finals and as many semi-final appearances, apart from winning the doubles title on two occasions so far in her career.
Venus remained away from tennis for quite some time owing to a sprained kneecap since falling down to Bulgarian opponent Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarter-final round at the Wimbledon Championships 2010.
Her doctor has informed Venus to pull out of major events including Cincinnati, Stanford as well as San Diego in a bid to get back in top form to participate in Montreal just a few days ago.
"This summer has not been an ideal one for me and I was not expecting this at all, however I have been working really hard on my game and getting back in action. I am doing my best under the current scenario and only because I couldn’t play in the U.S. Open tune up tournaments, it doesn't mean that I won’t be able to play well at the Flushing Meadows”, said Venus.
Williams, who is seeded at the third spot to clinch the title in New York despite participating in just a total of eight championships this year, also decided to skip the last warm up competition in New Heaven. Venus believed that it was important to be 100% fit, both mentally and physically, and ready for the opening round of the U.S. Open, starting from Monday.
