  1. Contact you tax office, your employer will tell you where they are, and ask them the reason for your tax amount etc. Be ready with your National Health Number as it helps them to find your details.

  2. Tax basis is not your tax code.

Sounds like you need to complete a P46 (this form should be completed when you start work if you do not have a P45 from your previous employer)

Ask your employer for this form. You will need to complete, tick the statement that applies to you and sign. Pass this back to your employer who will send this to HM Revenue & Customs who should then sort your correct tax code out

  3. I've never heard of tax basis, but I can tell you that your tax is based on the information that the employer sends them so your employer is incorrect. I can only guess that it is like emergency tax. You should get any tax back at the end of the financial year or when your tax code changes.

  4. You need to ask your employer what tax code they are using - this is down to them. Did you sign a P46 when you started? If not, ask your employer to provide one. If this is your first job, sign the P46 to say so and your employer should put you on 543L on a cumulative basis which is not emergency code, but the correct code for your circumstances.
