  1. A rather drastic step, if you ask me.  Have you tried some tools to see what might be slowing it down?  It's either the computer or the network.

To see if it's the network, double-click on the network icon in the tray.  (Looks like 2 computers blinking at each other.)  Then, depending on your OS, you may have to select the network connection and click "status".  While doing NOTHING else (including uploading) see if the numbers are constantly changing.  if so, you have something in the background uploading data.  Get a virus checker immediately.  http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-2211811-104...

If nothing unusual, you'll want to check for some background programs.  Open the task manager (ctrl-alt-del, then select Task Manager).  Select the processes tab, then click on the CPU column to see the the higher numbers on top (may have to click twice).  You should see "System Idle" near the 95% range--that is OK.  If anything else is popping on top and constantly taking more than 20%, you have a processor hog on board.  If you don't recognize it, get a virus checker immediately.  http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-2211811-104...

  2. assuming you mean WIndows takes a long time to load up when it starts up then your problem is likely to be a combination of things. Too much starting with Windows, confused registry and most likely not enough system resources.

Reloading Windows will work to speed up your Pc but is a bit drastic, try using Tune Up Utilities to "re-tune" your PC (30 day trial available here http://www.tuneup-software.co.uk/downloa... ) There is an option in TUU to restrict what starts when Windows boots up and often a description of the what the file does so you can at least make an informed decision as to whether you want to disable it or not. You should clean the registry and once cleaned defrag the hard drive and when that is done defrag the registry. All this can be done from within TUU in the free trial version.

All this is pointless if you have lots of software and very little system memory, if you have 256Mb or less increase it to at least 512Mb preferably 1Gb, XP performs better with more memory (Vista min spec is 1Gb recommended).

Check how much free space you have left on your hard drive, Windows demands at least 10% free space to use for its own purposes (swap space etc) so anything less than that will drastically reduce system performance. If you have no drive space left either clean out what you no longer use or get a bigger Hard Drive, use the new one as the master drive (and put a new install of Windows on it) and use the old one for extra storage space (delete the all the folders to gain space). It will mean you will have to re-install all your programs again but you can't have your cake and eat it too!

  3. Ok first clear off any unused stuff if the speed is increased good then defag the hard drive then if it's still slow buy more RAM because it can seriously speed up your pc.

  4. You need to be very much more specific about your problem. What are you uploading (size of file)? To where (it might be a slow site)? What type of internet connection are you using (broadband or dial-up)? What is your connection speed (note that upload is always a lot slower than download)?

You are currently running the risk of reinstalling Windows unnecessarily.

  5. Ok, the first question is how big is the file you are trying to upload?

2: What is the download and upload speeds rated at for your internet connection.

Cable, DSL, FIOS, dial-up modem, what type of internet connection?

You can go to the website below. They have tools and stuff you can run to test your connection speed, and how good your connection settings are. This is not usually a problem that would cause you to reinstall Windows.

  6. if you plan on reloading windows, first backup your data, then wipe your drive clean, then reinstall from disk.  If you try and reinstall windows over your existing mess, you will be left with an even slower computer.

  7. What does your upload speed have to do with Windows?  Your upload speed is limited by your internet connection.

I don't really understand your question. What does the "20 mins" refer to?

The part of your question that I did understand, though, was about reinstalling Windows.  The answer is yes, you are correct; you reinstall from your Windows installation CD. You don't have to uninstall anything though.  Just boot from the Windows installation CD and follow the onscreen instructions.
