My pedometer stops registering the

My pedometer stops registering the number of steps taken after a short number of steps. I have tried moving it around my waist to find the best spot for it to work but to no avail. it is 2 years old but has not been used very much over the last 18 mths because of this problem. It is the model which has a security alarm on it.
