My peony got stepped on. Is it still alive?

I recently planted some herbacious peony divisions but the area where I planted it has been trampled all over by my mum. Will it survive and will it still grow as normal or will it be stunted or dead?

  1. The one thing I have learned about peony's is that they're hard to kill. I mowed mine down a few times and they always came back.

  2. ya they are pretty hardy plants. If they can survive cold winters of -30 degrees I am sure they can survive a bit of trampling. Just trim them down where the stalks have been pushed down- that will allow new growth to come up quicker. It may stunt the growth a little for this year but next spring they should still come up just the same. depending on where ya live and how long your summer is and how much light and water they get- cutting them down may actually help along their growth.

  3. tell your mom to watch where she steps her big feet!

  4. A peony is a tough plant.  This year it might be a little stunted but it will make a wonderful comeback next year I'm sure.

  5. cut it down the middle and taste the the inside of the plant, if it is sweet then its fine but if not then i would get a new one....>@

  6. There will be a temporary setback due to the loss of the food producing foliage, but it will send up new growth from the roots.Try to protect them with a product such as the green wire cages designed to give added support to the stems of herbacious plants.A second trampling, before energy stores are built back up in the roots by the new growth could cause death.

  7. Who knows?  Cut back the broken stuff so it doesn't get diseased, care for what's left, and hope for the best.

  8. I didn't know that what I had was a peony and cut it way back to almost nothing my first year in this house. The second year it nearly took over the flowerbed it is in! I've found it is a pretty hardy plant, obviously, and your question makes me want to go search on how to divide it, since it has nice foliage even after the bloom is over. I use those metal 1-foot fences to mark off my new plantings to discourage my lawn boys (and relatives) from trampling new growth.

  9. all those people were wrong. peonies re hard to kill when they adjusted and rooted. i say when they  at least month has been rooting and rooted successfully and started getting niutrients by roots. but if u just planted them they haven't rooted yet, and they haven't started getting nutrients by roots, they were using stored energy from leaves. i say they re dead. there is a very slight chance one or two will survive. i am not sure.

  10. it will surviv3.
