My cockatiel is a young hand-raised cockatiel I bought from a pet store. I only know she's younger than 1yr old. She is very tame, very sociable around humans, and hardly nips. She doesnt seem to eat ANYTHING except for her seed diet. She doesnt seem like to ANY sort of vegetables at all, I've tried carrots, etc, all following instructions. Shredding them, eating some of it myself, etc.

Most importantly, she doesnt eat Millet Spray, she treats it like a hostile thing when I put it near her. She WILL nip at it like its a threatening creature, but she doesnt eat it. She nips at it like she nips at ANYTHING she isnt used to, like Kleenex Tissue, Millet Spray, a pen, etc.

It seems she's never tried it before. If she doesnt want to eat Millet Spray, then how can I "reward" her for good things she does? Without a "reward" then I cant encourage good behaviour..

  1. You should put a vitamin and mineral supllement onto the seed but not the hull.I think no bird can resist sunflower seeds have you tried it?

  3. My birds always act scared of the millet sprays but I just leave it in the cage and they figure out it's not going to eat them so they eat it.

  4. I use sunflower seed as my reward treat. I haven't found a hookbill yet that can resist them. Remove the sunflower from your birds diet  and in a weeks time it will do flip flops for sunflower seed.

  5. You can reward your cockatiel by scratching her head. They love that more than anything. Save it as a reward rather than something you do all of the time. As soon as you discover something special that she loves that is available year round, then you can use that as a reward. (You could try unsalted, shelled sunflower seeds.)

  6. my cockatiels eat millet they won't eat carrots or any other fruit or veg but they like grass & dandelion leaves try yours on these my other birds also like them

  7. Have you tried fruits? Many cockatiels like to eat fruits like apples. Make sure the things you are feeding your cockatiel is small, not big, as a big thing would scare it and cause the cockatiel to nip.

I know a lot of cockatiels eat millet spray, but your cockatiel could be one that doesn't. Try giving it cereal like Cheerios, she might like it!

Plus- Not every reward is a treat or some food! Rewards can be a stroke, some loving words, or just a simple:

    "Good girl".
