Is he hibernating? I recently found him while camping in southern Missouri and he was doing perfectly fine at first, but now he is always asleep. I know he's not dead because he squirms around when i pick him up. HELP!

And p.s. -- I have no idea what species he is, if anyone knows that may be extreamly helpful.

He is about 1 inch long

He is tan on top and has a almost white on his stomach.

He has very brown horizontal stripes going down his back.

He has a moderate length tail, about 1/2 his body's length

And i don't really know if its a he... how do you tell?

  1. I disagree never NEVER use heat stones they can really hurt your reptiles !! does he look healty ?? happy ?? a happy lizard is bound to sleep alot ! Maybe try a pet store get a reptile vita bost like Repto

    :) good luck

  2. Wildlife rarely does well in captivity.

Being caught and surrounded (caged) by the enemy (and humans are the enemy to all wildlife) is stressful.  Stress alone can kill them.

They don't understand you want to be friends.  He's waiting to be a meal.

    What are you feeding him?

Do you have a heat lamp AND a UV light?

If you don't know what kind he is you don't know what his diet should be.  If he needs vegetables.  If something is toxic to him.

Also, by the time you're able to catch a lizard, it's usually sick or infested with parasites.  Or both.

Go to a reptile specialist vet.  He can tell you what kind you have, how to take care of it, and hopefully help it if it is sick.

    Other sources of help:

SPECIALTY reptile stores.  NOT Petsmart.  NOT Petco.  Those people are idiots.

Wildlife rehabilitation centers.  They'll be familiar with the critters in your area and will be able to help.

    Leave wildlife wild.

  3. Put a heat stone in there. there like rocks you plug in. he needs warm weather.

  4. i think it could be a igauna not sure but it needs WORMTH! always remember that

  5. maybe its a stage? the sleeping stage

  6. That is a tiny lizard, you might try researching abou this particular type of lizard. To find out the type of lizards, try typing lizards native to missouri, and look at photos., is he asleep at night? He may be nocturnal. Good luck figuring it out

  7. i looked it up and your lizard sounds like a southern prairie skink

look up southern prairie skink on google images and see if that looks like your lizard.

if so... research southern prairie skink on google and see what it needs to be provided with to live.

if thats not your lizard look up liarzs native to missouri on google and it will sho you pictures so you can see if your lizard matches one of those lizards.

if it matches one look that specific lizard up and see what it needs to live
