My piano teacher is being a major jerk...?

She gave me this easy piece a 9-year-old played along with other easy, boring pieces that are much simpler than what I'm used to playing and she won't let me do anything harder! I told my mother, but she said it was my fault for not working hard enough. I PRACTICE AN HOUR A DAY!!! What the h**l? I just want more challenging pieces! What can I do?

  1. i say that you don't learn practice it but once you have to play t show her what your made of and memorize a more difficult piece and play it

  2. I had the same problem when I was taking piano lessons. I just didn't feel challenged and I hated the whole Royal Conservatory of Music thing. I mean, I knew I had to play these boring compositions, but I wanted and needed more. I just felt like I was going through the motions and not doing anything creative.

Unfortunately, I ended up quitting the whole thing because I just felt uninspired and unsupported.

It's only years later that I ended up picking it up on my own and doing my own thing. I learned enough to know what I was doing. I also picked up the classical guitar and most recently, the harmonica.

Now, I don't recommend that you quit...but it sounds like the creative artist in you wants more. So you have the power to do that. Go to some music stores and pick up some books that you find interesting and challenge yourself. This can be completely seperate from your "traditional" lessons. Use your piano teacher as a facilitator. I mean, as much as it can become frustrating, the basics are still important and they will serve you when you're doing your own thing.

    Hope that helps

  3. Sound like it is time to quit wasting your money. Get rid of the teach and do your own thing. If your really want to play piano. You may want to study the works of some Jazz greats, Peterson, Shearing, and Monk. Have fun, and enjoy yourself.

  4. Does your school offer an advanced piano class?  I would look into that.  It sounds like you're too skilled for that particular one.  Good job!
