Question:

My pictus catfish seems to have some torn fins....?

I have one pictus catfish (just got him) and five small electric yellow cichlids. The people at the pet store caught him with a net and one of his pectoral fins got torn and his caudal fin has little bites out of it (I think it was the cichlids). I put in Stress Coat to repair the fins and replace the slime coating. What else can I do to repair his fins and make him come out more often? Thanks.

  1. Usually you help fish with torn fins recover using aquarium salt and other medications (if fin rot, you'd use malachite green), but Pictus Catfish are scaleless fish and are very sensitive to most medications. Maybe you can put 1/2 or less of the normal dose of aquarium salt to help the wounds heal faster, but I would really suggest against it.

Most fish will grow back their fins eventually, so just make sure to watch your Pictus for any possible bacterial infection from the torn fins, and stay on top of your water changes until he recovers.

I call my Pictus Catfishes Pierre, Jacque, and Monsieur, because their big whiskers and their cleaning habits remind me of french butlers for some reason. Have your pick if you like any of them. *dork* :>

  2. I think you have done enough!

    Your a good fish owner!

But I think maybe you should think about getting a different tank for the cichlids I heard they are mean fish!

You are fish should be named:

    Catty

    Sly

    Sushi

    Figi

    Racer

    Babe

    Bubba

    Bubbie

    Yellowie

    E-let-tric

    Shelby

    Jack

    Salt

    pepper

    cotton

    candy

    dolly

    Hope that helped!
