Hi, well i have a pony kept at grass and recently she has been moved into a new field. She is usually quite clean and stays white, but lately her bum is getting really dirty. every time i bring her in, i have to was her thoroughly, and it really doesn't look very nice!

I think it could be because of all the long grass in the field, but it's strange because before when she has moved field it has never been a problem!

any help?

  1. Do you mean she has diarrhea stains down the back of her legs?  Has she been wormed?  If she has...I'm guessing she is either in heat and is getting urine drip stains down her legs and between them...

Or the new grass field is giving her diarrhea.

So, my guess would be worms...

    in heat...

or green grass she's not used to.

  2. shampoo the bum if its not under neath the tail.

if it is underneath the tail that is dirty then get a baby wipe or a sponge and wipe thoroughly.

  3. I agree with the other members and think this is a reaction to the new grass or her being in season.

If you wash her thoroughly and then apply coat conditioner to the hair, this will help to prevent the stains remaining on the grey hair. The same applies to tail hair.

But, sorry to say stains are one of the downfalls of having a wonderful grey pony.

  4. that is strange

is it green dirt or brown dirt?

  5. Sounds like it's the rich grass, maybe it's a different variety of grass? That could upset her stomach.Or she could be in season as mentioned before, has she not had a season yet?

  6. She might be scouring because she has had a change of grass (ie lusher grass) and also this time she might have been a bit upset.  You never know what goes on when you are not there.

It might be that the grass has been treated with something that your pony is not used to or a greeing to.  Feed damp mashes with chaff to try and firm her up a bit and if she is otherwise alright hopefully it should right itself.  If she looks ill, call a vet.  It could also be worm damage.
