  1. algae is the enemy!!!!!!!!

you need a water test kit sold at hardware or pool stores.

it tells you if you need chlorine muriatic acid etc.

  2. The green is from algae.  You only need more chlorine and also a good stabilizer.  Just go to Ace Hardware store with a sample of your water.  They will tell you what you need and how much.  Happy swimming. :-)

  3. First, you need to add stabilizer to your water.  Usually you buy it in a granular form, and you can put this in a sock or nylon and let that hang in your pool (this way, the granules will dissolve but not just sit at the bottom of the pool).  You can also bring your water into your local pool store to be tested, and they can tell you exactly how much you should be adding if need be.

Once you have the stabilizer in your water, you need to shock it with a chlorine-based shock.  You can buy oxygen-based shocks but these will not get rid of the algae.  You also need to make sure you have stabilizer in the water when you shock it and add chlorine, because the stabilizer will help prevent the chlorine from being evaporated by the sun - overall it makes the chlorine effective.

Give it 48 hours after shocking it, and if the green is still there or the water appears cloudy, put in some algaecide.  There are algaecides produced for preventative maintenance, these are lower concentrations.  They will likely not kill your algae as easily unless you put a lot in.  You should try an algaecide that's at least 60%.  Put in the dosage of that, as per the recommendations on that brand's bottle.  Follow the instructions EXACTLY.  I work at a pool store and trust me, so many people just dump in the whole bottle of algaecide or don't follow the instructions precisely and end up with foamy water or very persistent algae.
