  1. it's high, but not harmful.  it will be irritable, especially for kids and it will turn your eyes bright red.  saying that, I wouldn't think twice about jumping in to cool off on a hot memorial day.

  2. It's too high

  3. 1-3ppm recommended normal, with 5ppm being the highest amount to subject your self to.  Get a new test kit and test the water before using to insure range is correct.  If you have to swim in high chlorine levels, hose off after using pool.

Also many test kits do not accurately test high chlorine levels so yours could be higher than you know!

  4. It is rare that a pool has a high chlorine reading as chlorine disapates in sunlight along with killing bateria. I would first check my readings, if you are using liquid kit get rid of it.

They are acid base agents and have a short shelf life it could be that your's is expired and you are now getting false readings.

Get the test strips to test your water. They have a long shelf life and are as accurate as the strips used by diabetics.

If the strips say your chlorine is high too, then shut off your chlorinator to bring down the count and that should not take very long.

If you can smell chlorine in your pool...you DONT HAVE ENOUGH! It's just the opposite of what everyone thinks. Chlorine only gives off an odor if it is exhausted. The smell is chlorimine gas which is a by product of the spent chlorine that has exhausted itself sanitizing the pool. The chlorimine gas lifts off the pool and that is the smell you detect. Most public pools smell like this because of the heavy bather load and the chlorine can't keep up with the bacteria. If you shock the pool, the smell goes away in seconds because now there is new chlorine to kill the bacteria. So if you smell chlorine shock the pool.

10 is high but not is it is just after treating.  It won't hurt anyone at that level, except people that are overly sensative to it anyway, may have a little trouble.
