I woke up this morning and saw my bird having an unusual problem,

he is not breathing through his nose, he is putting his top break against the cage bars to keep his mouth open. He's been doing this for 2 hours now. He never had this problem before.

He is 6 years old and i recently noticed that his feathers near his eye have been falling off.

When his mouth is closed, he makes squeaking noises & i also see some hard breathing ( his whole body goes up & down)

  1. you need to take him to the vet. qiuck too!!! if they show signs of illness its either too late or he may still have a fighting chance. he also 6 years of age too so he is areal old parakeet. i bet you really took care pf him i hope he gets over his illness

  2. Vet Vet Vet VET NOW! GO!

  3. Vet, now.  When birds show signs of illness, death is not far.  You need to have gotten him to the vet hours ago, but don't wait any longer.

Even on holidays there are emergency vets open.  Get off the computer, hit the phone book and find one!

  4. Needs avian vet asap. Could be upper respiratory infection or many other things. When birds show signs of illness like this it is almost time for end. Could have tumor. Many things can be done.

  5. The average life span of a budgie is about 7 years and given that yours is about 6 years old, it could be that he is getting to that point where he may pass. With Budgies, they tend to mask their illnesses very well and when you do start to see signs, the illness is pretty serious at that point. I would highly recommend that you contact your vet and get him in for a check up.

  6. This is completely normal for a bird.  He is molting.  When birds loose their feathers that is molting.  However keeping his mouth open may be a problem.  He might even be sawing down his beak.  Moving up and down has nothing to do with his breathing, he is either listening to a lound tempo or beat or he is annoyed, he can also be saying he's happy.  I have a blue fronted amazon and he sqeakes alot.  Pay attention 4 another week.  If this continues see a vetrinarian.

    GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BIRD!!!

  7. I would say go to the vet.  But I hope your birdy gets better!
