My poor hamster?

Shes losing her fur!! I take care of her very well - clean shavings once a week, changing her water every day, and a constant supply of food. She also has a running wheel in her cage and runs in it ALL night. Once I noticed she was losing her fur, (on her shoulder blades) I kept a close eye on her. I found out that the exact spot thats bald, is rubbing against the middle part of the wheel. I don't feel comfortable taking it out - she needs exercise, and its almost as tall as her cage so i cant get a bigger one...what do i do! Some ideas would help me out alot..

  1. uhhum.

get a new cage with a bigger wheel.

and if you cant like do that then obviously hamsters know when they are hurt or not. so yeah, if it was hurting her she would stop going in it, so i guess shes fine!

if you don't feel comfortable keeping that wheel, then get a bigger cage with a bigger wheel, a website that i would recommend would be.. http://www.petco.com/product/106173/PETC...   click that link, get back to me, and I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK!

    =)

  2. Go to the vet immediately

  3. get a hamster ball that way you can take the wheel out and she can still get exercise. or build her a little playpen. also, you can buy wheels that are closed in.. i think they're called Wodent wheels.

  4. If it's the wheel that's causing her to lose her fur then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If the bald spot doesn't look red or discomforting then I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a little fur, and if she's feeling fine enough to still run, then that's good  :)   If you're really worried about her fur being rubbed off then try taping some electrical tape or thin fabric to the spot that's rubbing (on the wheel, I mean). I don't know if you have a metal wheel, but the wheel I have for my hamster is metal and there are two prongs inside the wheel to keep it on it's base. If this is the part you're talking about then that's the advice I would give.

Also, if it WERE some type of skin disease (which you say it's not) there there would be no sense in taking her to the vet. Skin diseases and tumors are very veryyy common in hamsters, and mostly harmless. Good luck!

  5. You need to go to the vet immediately. She can be diseased if she's losing hair. If she doesn't get it back within a week or two, you need to take her to the vet.

You don't want your hamster to die.

  6. Get a wire wheel or silent spinner wheel with no center protruding axis

  7. Get a new wheel. Take the old one out. Put the new one in. If a wheel big enough for your pet doesn't fit in its habitat, you need to get a bigger habitat.
