  1. yes yellow pages in england look there tv radio repairs

  2. There are repair companies, extensions of the old TV/Radio repair shops, who could look at this. And there are repair divisions of big box retailers like Best Buy's Geek Squad, who will look at things, but may ultimately send them out, and tend to be pricey.

First thing -- check to see if you're still under warranty. If so, you should get a free fix, unless the failure was due to serious mishandling on your part. If still under warranty, you can find a local authorized service center (particularly if you have a major brand) and even avoid having to pay shipping on the unit for repairs.

If not, you may find a local repair guy. But consider... You're probably talking something like $100 just to take a look at your DVD player. There are things the local guy can fix, and there are things that probably can't be fixed. You should think about the cost of repair vs. the cost of replacement.. if you can spend as much on a new device at the same level of performance as you'd pay repairing it, get the new device... it'll have features your old one didn't, and it's new.. no wear and tear.

Before you commit too much cash, take a look around for the sort of portable DVD player you can buy today for around $100, and think about how that compares to yours. You may well be better off buying a new unit.

I've done both sides of this in the past. I had a $650 S-VHS deck that had problems, and I paid the local repair guy to fix it.. money well spend (I still have it, though it's in a closet). When my kids' $60 VHS deck died, I replaced with a $25 VHS deck, which lasted at least until I sold it at a yard sale last year for $5.
