Question:

My potatoes have blight. some tubers have brown patches on skin but aren't rotten - can i eat them?

just got back from hols to find haulms dead to ground. dug all spuds (1st & 2nd earlies). some have gone rotten but would say these were damaged anyway. would like to salvage some. can i eat now if they have these patches? should i risk storing or just bin the lot? thanx

  1. I would throw them out if I were you.


  2. Are you sure it's blight?  Mine have died off cos that's what they do when the tubers are ready.  Tubers will rot if the ground is waterlogged.  Any that are firm with no signs of rot or disease will be fine to eat.

  3. Back in the 1840s the Irish were starving because their potatoes were stricken with blight.  The fungus ruins the crop and turns the tubers into near-toxic bombs.

  4. It may not have been blight - could have been stem rot with all this rain. Any potatoes that are sound will be fine to eat and if storing,turn them through every week and take out any suspect ones.

    If you planted early the tops of earlies and some 2nds will have died back by now anyway,so don`t panic - eat away at them.
