I always liked the updoo that's like a french roll, but with ringlets streaming down, on my black friends.  Or small braids, if it's down.

i think u should do corn rolls in the front and bring them to the top and end with a pretty bun

and hav random peices of curly hair comin out of ur bun

you can do one with just curls coming down or an up do with curls coming down any thing with curls always looks cute

I'm not black, but I bet this look would look cute.  I wore my hair like this and I have very fine curly permed hair, but a lot of it!  It's only medium length and I wanted an updo, so this is what my gal did.  She put all my hair in little braids up and then from the top, she made a spray or spring curls.  I put a ribbon in from the bottom of the spray, but you could put cute flowers or beads in it.  It's darling.
