How do I get her out of this habit? I've tried tapping her on her ears and telling her to stop, so now she gets a safe distance away and barks

  1. tapping her ears,,, why on earth would you do that,, it is cruel and ridiculous.

you don't know what her mix is,,  she is probably genetically geared to barking..

risk you take with a dog of unknown lineage

  2. When she is quiet, say "quiet" (or word of your choice) and treat her. Every time she barks at you and stops say "quiet" and treat. After a few times of this, say quiet and if she stops reward her. This is just like teaching her how to sit and to come. You need to let her know that when she stops barking that she gets rewarded for it..

If you don't like this method you can try to just ignore her. At obedience classes we are taught that you reward the behavior that you want, and ignore the behavior that you don't want. Dogs don't like to be ignored, so when they are ignored when they do the wrong thing, they will stop doing it.

  3. My new puppy does that too.  She has some nerve.  I snap my fingers at here to get her attention.

  4. Grab her and put her on her back (like a dominant dog would do) so she knows you're not messing around and sternly tell her no. I would look her in the eye too and not look away until she does first (the stare test). This way, she knows you're in charge. She'll get it after a while.
