Question:

My puppy cries and whines when chewing on a pig ear?

This might seem like a silly question, but I gave my Min Pin Puppy a pig ear last night and she seems to just love it. She was wagging her tail and if you came near her she would run away with the pig ear in her mouth, but then she started crying while she was chewing it. Still appeard to be happy but she was whining the whole time.

Why do you think that was, I took it away from her just to be safe and she was really sad.

Why do you think that was?

  1. pigs ears aren't good for dogs in lots of ways, they're all fat and they're treated with c**p and they have sharp edges when broken, that's probably why the dog was whining it was hurting it's mouth on the pig ear...stick to denta-bones, they're better for the dog all around

  2. She's so happy! Don't take it away from her! ;) Usually pups will whine when they're young, with excitement.. I have two 3 month old golden pups and they whine when they get super excited because they don't know how to control all their emotions yet.. They're just like how a child might cry for several reasons but as they grow they learn to cry only when they are upset. All dogs are different but she was probably crying out of excitement for how good the pig ear was. I would say you are just fine to let them chew away.. If it was effecting your pup negatively they wouldn't want to chew on it and eat it..

  3. Maybe the puppy is self conscious!

  4. I bet she has just realized she is chewing on some pig's ear and is feeling sorry because she is, but likes it so much she can't give it up.

  5. I would stick with the Nylabones, Dentabones and Ropes.  The ropes can be good for keeping the dog's teeth clean and they love them.  Pig ears just give dogs diarrhea anyways... :-x

  6. Your gorgeous puppy is just really enjoying herself. Look at her body language, wagging tail and being protective of the pigs ear is what says "man this is great, I'm not giving it back to you!" It's like when you eat a piece of chocolate and go "oh yum... that's exactly what I felt like!"

I have a Hungarian Vizsla puppy (7 months old) and he does the same thing with squeeky toys. I asked our dog trainer and she said the same thing. They actually call it singing. Its a great thing that you have discovered something that your dog loves!

Pigs ears are NOT bad for your dogs. Otherwise Veterinary Surgeons wouldn't sell them. When it comes to getting advice on what your dog should eat, only listen to the experts.

    Good luck!

  7. she's probably teething.

Pig ears are good for cleaning teeth, But I would never give any raw hide to any adult. They rip off bigger pieces and can choke on them. they eat those things in minutes..

Fatty, unhealthy.. only good for cleaning teeth.. go to a grocery store and see if they sell large soup bones. those are healthy and great for teeth.

  8. Your puppy is teething and chewing on things 1 helps to get rid of the puppy teeth and 2 helps to break in the new teeth.  Imagine a sore muscle that your rub and it hurts but feels good at the same time....Also i could be the dog trying to protect its food from what it sees as a threat ie you, or other animals near by.  You may notice blood on items its chewing on and its ok your pup isnt going to die.  But until your dog finishes teething you may want to consider crating the dog at night to keep him/her out of trouble.  My german shep got ahold of a 275 dollar pair of leather boots when he was teething.

  9. maybe it just "hurt so good"! as John Cougar Mellencamp sang.....

  10. Recently had to put down 2 dogs in a matter of 3 months.A Bichon Frise and a Boxer.  Was so depressed that a friend of mine who couldn't keep her Bichon Frise gave her to me.  I had alot of pig ears around so i gave one to my new pup.  Like your mini-Pincher it is also a small sized puppy.  Well. she tried biting it but quickly gave up on it.  I think it was just to hard for her to handle.  Ended up just l*****g it.  I immediately replaced it with a stuffed animal made specifically made for dogs since you should never take a dog toy away from your dog without replacing it,  The dog becomes depressed. confused & could very well be wary of you, and become extremely possessive leading to aggression.  Brought Bella with me to the pet store.  Picked out appropriate doggie toys & placed them on the floor.  We bought the ones she choose & all is well in Doggie Land!  In addition to her favs also got some Dental Bones & nylon toys. Hope  we helped. Good luck.
