Question:

My puppy hates being brushed?

I have a 3 month old bichon frise-poodle mix but she won't let us brush her. I'll put her toy up with her, but she runs away and ignores us for about 15-30 minutes every time we try. She has really poofy hair, so it doesn't hurt her, and I've tried 2 different kinds of brushes but she still hates it! How can I get her to let us brush her? We've had her for a month, and she loves it when we pet her too.

  1. Have someone hold her down and you brush her or the other way around you hold her and someone else brush her.

  2. try giving her a favorite treat for 3 strokes of brushing, then a little later give her a favorite treat for 6 strokes of brushing, etc... see where I'm going with this. that way she will learn to associate something she likes with the brushing. Something must have spooked her about the brushing or the brush, now you need to teach her its all good. Good luck!

  3. She might grow out of it. My husky did this somethin aweful! She would actually nip at us! She's much better now though.

In the meantime... make sure that you talk to her in an even tone of voice and praise her a lot while you are brushing her. Give her toys and treats when you get done. She'll probably ignore you.. but she'll get over it and be ok.

    Hope this helps! good luck!

  4. try buying a brush that's like a glove.  they're kinda cheap.  try giving her lots of praise when she lets u brush her.  and try giving her treats when she behaves when ur brushing her.  but remember to talk to her in a low soothing tone, so she feels safe.

  5. I got a brush that is like a mitten. So, when I brush my lab puppy he loves it because it is contoured to the shape of my hand. They are fairly inexpensive (I got mine for under $5) and are really easy to clean.
