I have a puppy that just turned 3 months on the 23rd. He started humping me yesterday and I was really surprised because he is so young. He is not fixed and won't be until he is 4months. So between now and then how do I get him to stop other than NO because that's not working. He is starting to follow me from room to room and when I stop for an instant he is already getting "busy". Is it normal at this young? And will this stop for the most part when he gets fixed?

  1. Humping in most cases is NOT a sexual activity.  It's a dominance action, and you need to teach your dog that you are Alpha Pack Leader. No, it won't stop when he gets fixed.  My dogs are all neutered & spayed and they all hump, including the female.  They hump each other to prove which one is alpha over the others. -!-

  2. he is just going through a stage. once he gets a little bit older he would stophis little habbit

  3. My female Collie pup was doing this to my 5 yr old son when she was about 3 months.  I directed my son to just get up and walk away from her when she does it.  I have heard about it being a dominance thing that pups do.  I have also heard that pushing the dog or any kind of show of dominance to her would only encourage it because she would see your resistance as a power struggle.  After my son stopped pushing her and did as I directed, she stopped trying to do it to him.  Getting up and walking away just shows that you are not interested in a power struggle...you are alpha and that is that!

  4. Humping sometimes can be just a dominate behavior.  Having him fixed might help but then it might not!

You must start now to let him know that his behavior is not excepted by you and stop it.

  5. Agree with Nedra, this kind of humping is a dominance action, not a sexual action.  Every time he tries it, tell him "NO!" and push him down.  Since "NO" alone isn't working for you, take a hold of his scruff gently but firmly, and push him down to the ground.  A dog won't know what "NO" means just because you'd like him to, and some need a little stronger attention to get the picture.  If he doesn't listen to "NO", push him down, make him listen.

Keep doing it every time he humps your leg, someone else's leg, or any dog you don't want a dominance struggle with.
