  1. no/call your banker asap

  2. :YES - you need to sign up for credit protection and put a stop on any new credit applications that you do not approve via a phone call to your home phone number.  You also need to call the Social Security Administration and get a new SS#.

  3. It is a definite possibility. You are going to want to be very aware/vigilant about tracking your credit history from now on.

In addition, you can take steps to help mitigate the risks - the link in my source has excellent steps you can take to prevent further damage to your good name.

  4. Absolutely, you should call your credit card company and tell them your card may have been compromised.

  5. They absolutely can.  You need to call all 3 credit bureaus right now, and get a fraud alert placed on your files.  That will raise a red flag if the thief tries to get credit in your name.  Unfortunately that would now be extremely easy, because they have your name, address and date of birth from your driver's license, and along with your SSN that's all they need.  So it's important to contact the credit bureaus immediately.  You can find the contact information for all 3 bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com.  You should never carry your social security card with you , specifically for this reason.  Sorry you had to learn this the hard way.  Good luck.

  6. Absolutely.  You should lock your credit report.  It will cost you a bit and it's a pain but if you lock them, no one can open a credit account in your name.  Also, you need to call your credit card companies and report the theft and have them cancel the cards.

You should NEVER carry your social security card.

  7. You can put the account on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus for you. It has to be renewed every 90 days. If you get a police report, it will be on file for 7 years. Social Security has a fraud dept #, their toll free # 1-800-269-0271.
